Mr. Pogue, Mr. Mossberg, where are your mankinis?

Is it just me or is there a little bit of difference in how men and women in tech media are represented?

waltmossberg.jpg
The venerable Walt Mossberg, of the Wall St. Journal and All Things D. He’s the forebear of all tech bloggers and the most influential tech reviewer, bar none. His image? Knowledgeable, a tad curmudgeonly, but accessible.

davidpogue.jpg
David Pogue, of the NY Times, second only to Mossberg in influence in the gadget world. Image? A bit goofy, but totally in-the-know, your friendly, non-threatening but brainy advisor in all things tech-related.

Let’s move on to some of the best-known women tech personalities.

morganwebb.jpg
Morgan Webb, perhaps the best-known of the Tech TV hosts, hosts X-Play. Image? I believe she’s a genuine gamer, but I’ve mostly only seen photos like these. So let’s say sexy.

amandamackay.jpg
Jessica Chobot, hosts gaming shows for IGN. Image? Unknown gamer girl becomes the most sought after gaming personality in the world after licking her PSP. Hot.

karibyron.jpg
Kari Byron, of Discovery’s Mythbusters. Image? Goes semi-naked in the name of science.

kristinholt.jpg
Kristen Holt, now also a TechTV reporter. Previously best-known as a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and as the American Idol contestant who literally fell on her face as she ran into the audition room. Image? Uh, sexy cheerleader?

I have nothing against beautiful bodies, bikinis, or sexy photos. We all know sex sells and everyone wants to look at good-looking people. But the standards are so so different for women, even in a field like technology which one would think would give you the excuse to sit in front of the Playstation with a few six-packs (of beer, not abs) and some cheetos because it’s all in the name of research. While all these women probably work in technology because of a real interest in it, all we really get to see are their toned legs and tan lines. I doubt Walt Mossberg has ever been asked to do a camera test in a bikini. But I may be wrong, and if anyone has photos, please do send them.
