It ain’t the first HDMI-to-Mini DisplayPort adapter that we’ve heard of, but there’s nothing like a little competition in a market that Apple’s own closed mindset helped create. Bitterness aside, we’re pretty stoked to hear that Kanex — the same company responsible for that oh-so-handy Mini DisplayPort Adapter for Mac mini — has introduced its own solution for piping Blu-ray, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 signals right onto that gorgeous 27-inch panel that resides in your iMac. Our BFFs over at TUAW stopped by the outfit’s Macworld booth in order to give it a look, and they said that every pixel looked absolutely fantastic. Sadly, it looks as if you’ll have to wait until April to drop your buck-fifty (not including cables), but hey, it’s not like using that 13-inch CRT for a few more months will kill you. Or maybe it will, on second thought.

You know you’ve wondered what Google Earth would look like across a curved, eight-display installation, and now your most stupendous dreams are a reality thanks to Liquid Galaxy. That’s the moniker that’s been given to Jason Holt’s 20 percent project, which he’s just now getting to showcase to the world at the TED conference in San Francisco. Reportedly, eight Linux machines are tied to the process, and he’s able to fly through the digital skies via voice commands and sheer mental strength. Or maybe it’s just voice commands. Head past the break for a cockpit view, but be sure to close one eye if you’re prone to motion sickness.

If you need a quick and dirty light tent but you don’t want to shell out for a commercial model or spend time building a DIY version, this light tent can be built in a matter of minutes from office supplies.

Over at the blog Mostly Color—a blog focused on color theory, design, and photography—they have instructions for a simple-to-make light tent. The components are nothing more than folded paper and binder clips. It doesn’t have the same versatile diffusing qualities as a commercial model made out of ripstop nylon and paired with a set of studio flashes but for simple product-style photography with natural light or a diffused overhead flash (the paper walls of the light tent are a bit thick for traditional through-the-side diffusion) you can’t beat it for price and ease of construction.

Check out the link below for instructions or if you’re in the mood to take a bigger DIY project make sure to check out how to make a light tent out of cardboard and tissue paper or K’Nex building toys. Have a favorite photography-related DIY hack? Let’s hear about it in the comments.

If you fold like an orgami swan at the idea of making a birthday toast in front of a group of people or going to a party by yourself, then you might like self-improvement blog Dumb Little Man’s tips for overcoming shyness.

Everyone (well, almost everyone) gets overcome with shyness at some point—and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you’re looking for ways to get past your shyness or find that it’s interfering with your life, blogger Mark Harrison has a few ideas for you to try.

One suggestion: Pick something that makes you just a little uncomfortable, then get out there and just do it. No one’s suggesting you try karaoke if you’ve never sung a note in public before. Instead, start small, and build your confidence when you succeed. Ask a question from the audience during your next company presentation, or vow to say hi to two new people at the next party you attend. It’s okay to be nervous—baby steps.

Check out the rest of the post for more good tips for overcoming shyness, then share what’s worked for you in the comments.

Reebok recently started selling a walking shoe, called Easytone, that is supposed to tone your leg and butt muscles while you walk.

And the buzz machine swung into action. The Easytone shoe has made a huge splash–TV appearances, newspaper and magazine articles, buzz, buzz, buzz.

If the shoe fits, does it really firm up those muscles? Does the Easytone shoe work?

Dan Ariely is James B. Duke Professor of Behavioral Economics at Duke University is skeptical. He points out that the scientific evidence is thin. Reports of Easytone effectiveness may, he speculates, may be due to the placebo effect. (Placebos are inert pills or any item that can’t possibly be of direct medical benefit, but still makes people get better.)

The placebo effect is enormously important in medicine. When a new drug is tested on people and turns out to be effective, a notable number of people in the control group, who received a sham pill rather than the real thing, always get better too.

As it turns out, the placebo effect contributes heavily to the positive effects of exercise too. When people are told (falsely) that a particular activity is good exercise, many of them believe it so strongly that they lose weight and body fat and their blood pressure even goes down. Which has me wondering how I can convince myself that reading in bed, sleeping late, and taking long hot showers will make me thinner.

If you ever needed a reason to go Linux, here you go. The noise surrounding this patently obscure Windows XP bug / patch fiasco has just reached a fever pitch, and now we’ve got engineers within Redmond scratching their heads, too. As the story goes, Microsoft recently patched a security hole that took care of an antediluvian DOS vulnerability, and in doing so, some users began to see BSODs and endless reboots. Today, we’ve learned that the patch has been yanked, and Microsoft is suggesting that malware is to blame. But here’s the skinny — the patch simply disturbed the malware, which called a specific kernel code that directs your PC to keel over; in other words, any application that calls that same code could theoretically leave your machine in dire straits. And that, friends, probably explains the software giant’s following quote:

“In our continuing investigation in to the restart issues related to MS10-015 that a limited number of customers are experiencing, we have determined that malware on the system can cause the behavior. We are not yet ruling out other potential causes at this time and are still investigating.“

Rock, meet hard place.

Well, it looks like you can add another contender to the great light bulb debate — a group of researchers from RTI International now says that nanofiber lighter is more efficient than incandescent light bulbs, and safer than compact fluorescents. The secret to that, it seems, is a combination of nanofiber-based reflectors and photoluminescent nanofibers (or PLN), which together are able to form a lighting device that pumps out more than 55 lumens of light output per electrical watt consumed. That’s five times more efficient than a regular incandescent light bulb, and since there’s no mercury, the researchers say it’s far safer than CFL bulbs. What’s more, it’s also apparently able to produce more natural light than CFLs, although there’s noticeably no mention of potential pricing — they do say that the first products using nanofiber lighting could be available in three to five years, though. Video after the break.
