post Cement a New Business Relationship with a Well-Timed Follow-up [Notes]

Language like “leveraging your contacts” makes us a bit queasy, but the fact remains that finding a job or advancing your career often depends largely on your network. The Simple Dollar finance weblog suggests a well-timed follow-up is essential in cementing those business relationships.

Knowing when to time the follow-up note is important. Sending one five minutes after you meet someone, for example, will likely create the impression that you are desperate, if not a tad unhinged, neither of which will help give you that career boost. As a general rule, The Simple Dollar says to “give yourself between twelve and twenty-four hours after you meet someone to follow up.” The important thing is to follow up quickly, no later than 48 hours after your initial meeting since you want the person to retain some impression of you. Your originality notwithstanding, a quick follow-up is all the more important if you met the contact at a large conference or other venue where s/he met countless other people.

Browse the full article for more suggestions for an effective follow-up, and let us know how you further your business relationships (just making friends with people who share common interests in your field counts) in the comments.
