post DataPlay unveils CSS-friendly external DVD burner

Just a week after the DVD CCA approved an unexciting (and incredibly restrictive) download-to-burn scheme, DataPlay has unveiled what it calls the “world’s first CSS-managed recording DVD burner.” Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this type of setup, and as it turns out, DataPlay is actually “participating in the Qflix technology and IP licensing program.” The aptly-named MovieWriter is an external USB 2.0 device that is “capable of writing CSS encrypted content for playback on standard DVD players,” but alas, you’ll be forced to pick up the presumably expensive CSS-MR pre-keyed recordable discs through Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden before any burning can take place. Currently, no pricetag is being listed, but we are told that the outfit is already planning an internal version for OEMs to integrate into pre-fabricated machines. [Warning: PDF read link]

post Visa rolls out payWave-enabled Micro Tag key fobs

In the latest scheme to make it just a little easier for you to part with your money, Visa has begun rolling out its Micro Tag key fobs for contactless (and if under $25, signature-less) payments. The issuer-customizable Tags are based on Visa’s payWave technology — an RFID system similar to MasterCard’s PayPass — and are meant to act as companions to existing credit and debit cards. To commemorate the launch, Visa passed out 1,000 Tags pre-loaded with $15 at yesterday’s San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park, encouraging fans to purchase the fatty stadium concessions that could perhaps lull them into the false notion that this a completely secure payment method.

post How To: Handle Criticism with Grace

Learn to accept criticism—no matter how harsh—with aplomb by following tips from weblog Zen Habits. For example:

Thank the Critic
Even if someone is harsh and rude, thank them. They might have been having a bad day, or maybe they’re just a negative person in general. But even so, your attitude of gratitude will probably catch them off-guard.

I don’t know how many times I’ve fielded extremely negative criticisms sent to the Lifehacker inbox with a “Thank you” and then received an apology. Of course, not all criticism is unfounded, and the post discusses how to handle the ego blow that comes with a critique and how to work toward improving where the criticism is valid. Let’s hear how you handle criticism in the comments. Photo by Zara-Jay.
