post Parrot intros Parrot Party Bluetooth speaker system

France’s Parrot has busted out yet another device based on their wireless protocol of choice, with its new Parrot Party Bluetooth speaker system providing a smaller, more underpowered alternative to its recently announced Bluetooth Boombox. With nothing more than a pair of 3W speakers, your “party” will likely be somewhat limited, although it does at least boast support for A2DP to pick up stereo audio from any compatible Bluetooth source (a standard RCA input’s also included for your non-Bluetooth needs). At just nine inches long and 22 ounces, the device is also a good deal more portable than the twelve pound Boombox, and it promises to pump out the tunes for a full four hours on its built-in, rechargeable battery. If that’ll do, you should be able to grab one sometime in July for 119€, or about $160. [Warning: PDF link]

post Steve Jobs and Bill Gates: Historic discussion live from D 2007

We kind of never thought we’d see the day where Mac and PC voluntarily shared the stage on neutral ground, but that day is today. Very soon Bill Gates and Steve Jobs — both pioneering execs that need absolutely no introduction — will sit up in front of the audience here at D and discuss god knows what. Don’t miss this, people, who knows if this will happen again in any of our lifetimes. You’ll know when we get started. Who’s got odds that they don’t walk out and say “Hi, I’m a PC.” “Hi, I’m a Mac.”?

We’re in! They’re playing the Beatles, just like they did when Jobs came out the first time.

Update: Video recap online! Right after the break, but before the rest of our coverage.

post Featured Linux Download: Customizable terminal sessions with Tilda

May 31st, 2007

Tilda-Config.png

Linux only: Free open-source app Tilda creates customizable terminal sessions in Linux.

Tilda provides the same functionality as many other popular Linux terminal applications such as Gnome Terminal, Eterm, xterm, konsole, etc. However, Tilda offers customizable options not typically seen in terminal applications. Tilda can be configured to be displayed on all worksapces, hidden from the taskbar, always appear on top, start hidden, be called with a keyboard shortcut, and much more. Personally, I have Tilda set to always be on top, and hidden from the taskbar. Tilda sits in the corner of my desktop on top of all windows, and makes it very easy to quickly install packages. According to the Tilda homepage:

Tilda is a Linux terminal taking after the likeness of many classic terminals from first person shooter games, Quake, Doom and Half-Life (to name a few), where the terminal has no border and is hidden from the desktop until a key is pressed.

Ubuntu users can install Tilda using the following command:

sudo apt-get install tilda

All other Linux users can grab a copy of Tilda from the project homepage.
